Cavs Legion Lair Lit by TCP to be Home of the
Shaker Heights High School Esports Program
SHHS Esports to Use the Facility for Team Practices and Future Competitions
The Legion Lair Lit by TCP, the new state-of-the-art esports center and home to Cavs Legion GC, the NBA 2K League team of the Cleveland Cavaliers will now also serve as home to the Shaker Heights High School (SHHS) Esports team. Located in the Battery Park neighborhood near downtown Cleveland, the 2,700 square foot facility will be used by the program for team practices with the potential to host future competitions versus other area high schools
The SHHS Esports team currently has over 40 students that compete across four game titles – Overwatch, Super Smash Bros, Rocket League and League of Legends in the Esports Ohio League. The team was the league runner-up in Super Smash Bros for Spring 2019 and the league champions for Overwatch in Fall 2019.
“The Shaker Heights High School Esports team is incredibly excited about our partnership with the Cavaliers and Cavs Legion GC. Not only will our team have the opportunity to practice in a professional venue, but the additional streaming and authoring technology available at the Lair means that we can now engage students that are interested in other areas of esports, such as shoutcasting and video production,” said Keith Szalay, SHHS Esports coach. “Thanks to the Cavs partnership and through the generous support of the Shaker Schools Foundation, we will be able to positively impact more students than ever before and teach them technology production skills and digital citizenship lessons that go beyond the scope of competitive gaming.”
“We are proud to team up with Shaker Heights High School to provide their esports program with a venue and the resources to practice, compete and learn,” said Jonathan Sumers, Cavs senior director of esports. “We commend them for being one of the first Northeast Ohio high schools to have an esports program and for having the foresight to provide the talented youth in our community with an outlet and platform to showcase their skills and learn about the many opportunities that exist behind-the-scenes throughout the esports industry.”
Featuring the latest in gaming technology with help from partners like TCP, Alienware, Raynor, SteelSeries and WebAround, Legion Lair is equipped for a high level of competitive gaming. The venue is powered by an Everstream internet network capable of download speeds upwards of five GB/S for a zero-lag gaming and streaming experience. The facility is also open to the public for a full calendar of organized gaming competitions, tournaments and events.
The partnership with Shaker Heights High School is another community touchpoint for Cavs Legion, who also hosts an Esports Club at Legion Lair in partnership with the City of Cleveland. Students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District visit the Lair each week to game and learn from industry pros about career opportunities that exist in the gaming landscape – for example, Harrison Walsh, Professor of Game Design at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
